XP cd in drive. let the CD load Slax Linux environment. So with this site's suggestions, I pressed f2, found how to disable the hard drive, to get the machine to boot from the cd-rom, and used the chkdsk /p command. weblink damn these computers. However, frequently there is a better way of save your installation, as long as you have the installation media available.
